The 2013 Spring/Summer Opportunity for Achievement in Research-Minority Health and Health Disparities (SOAR-MHHD) Research Internship is aimed at engaging, recruiting, and training highly qualified undergraduate students from underrepresented minority and other disparity populations, from local universities, into minority health and health disparities research careers. The internship is supported through the Center of Excellence for Health Disparities in Our Nation’s Capital (CEHD), a National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities grant award to Georgetown and Howard Universities, in collaboration with the Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Science (GHUCCTS). Our goal is to promote careers in minority health and health disparities research. The vision of the CEHD is to eliminate health disparities by transferring knowledge from research to practice to policy. The SOAR-MHHD Research Internship is a specialized didactic and mentored academic semester and summer long program designed to provide an opportunity to engage in research related to minority health and health disparities. This program will bring together undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds and interests in the Washington, DC metro area to create a rich mix of participants from across disciplinary backgrounds with different career goals. Research interns will participate in multi-disciplinary research projects of senior investigators who will also serve as mentors and role models. The program structure consists of: A mentored research experience; Didactic sessions; Visits to research facilities; Participation in clinical and translational research activities; Social events; and A summer research symposium. The time commitment is part-time during the spring semester (~15-20 hours/week) and full-time during the summer (40 hours/week).
