Subject: Undergraduate Research Assistant Opportunity Description: We have a position available in the Byung-Eun Kim lab in the Department of Animal and Avian Sciences for an undergraduate research assistant this summer. The lab offers a variety of projects using mouse models, C. elegans, and cell culture to study mechanisms of copper homeostasis in animals. Copper is an essential micronutrient and reduced copper uptake, utilization, or excretion can lead to severe human health consequences, including Wilson's disease, Menkes disease, and impaired neurological function. The ideal candidate would demonstrate academic success in the life sciences, and more importantly, a strong desire to carry out exciting new research throughout the undergraduate degree. We are particularly interested in students intending to pursue graduate education, as this position will provide the perfect opportunities to prepare the basic research skills required to thrive in a research environment. All training will be provided, although the student must possess a willingness to learn quickly and take on new challenges throughout the project. Ideally the project would be extended over the course of multiple years with the goal of making the undergraduate research position a fully integrated member of the lab, so early stage students will be highly preferred.
