Subject: LabTV opportunity for student journalists/filmmakers at UMD Description: LabTV is a new project supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Google. LabTV was founded by Jay Walker, Curator and Chairman of TEDMED in collaboration with Dr. Francis Collins, Director of the NIH. LabTV’s mission is to use video to attract young people, especially women and minorities, to the field of biomedical research. LabTV is launching an online initiative consisting of video profiles of emerging medical researchers working at NIH funded labs at top universities across the nation. These profiles will be distributed through online platforms, including YouTube and a LabTV-specific website tailored to connecting high school and undergraduate students with medical researcher mentors they can relate to and learn from. Each lab researcher video profile will be made by a student filmmaker/journalist on the same campus as the labs. To lead this effort, Jay Walker brought in Emmy award nominated filmmaker David Hoffman, with over 50 years of experience and more than 150 PBS specials and series to his credit. David created video profiles with researchers at UC Berkeley and UCSF to serve as templates for students to watch. These template video profiles can be viewed at: http://lab-tv.org/filmmakers/video-profile-templates/. We are pleased to announce that University of Maryland, College Park has been selected to participate in the first cohort of our video profile series. We are already collaborating with your university to select labs to profile. There is now an opportunity for your student filmmakers/journalists to get involved in this project and create video profiles of researchers at labs at their university. This is a great opportunity for students to have access to state of the art mentoring from Emmy award nominated filmmaker David Hoffman, to gain hands on experience and build an impressive sample reel, and produce their own work that will be showcased as part of a high profile global project. Top videos will potentially be included in a planned special event with the Tribeca Film Festival around our launch in April. Additionally, LabTV will be hosting a competition where David and his team will be selecting the best submitted videos with prizes totaling $10,000. Downloadable guidelines, a production overview, technical requirements and other detailed information are available on our website at www.lab-tv.org .
