Subject: UMDPS: Student Hourly Position Description: The Information Systems Unit of the Department of Public Safety is actively looking to employ highly competent student programming interns starting as early as May 27th, 2014 and continuing through the school year. Be a part of a small team dedicated to managing a computer network of over 200 desktops and servers, as well as 70 mobile computers spanning 4 buildings on and close by campus, as well as designing and building complex computer programs designed to simplify departmental work. Our student intern positions are a great stepping stone for a career in Computer Science industries and provide the opportunity for highly-motivated individuals to begin to interact with enterprise-level hardware and network systems. Benefits • Join a small team with a big job: meeting all the diverse computer needs of the police department that keeps our campus safe • Be one of the best-paid student interns on campus: $11-14/hour, commensurate with incoming skill set and experience • Gain valuable experience and build your resume: former interns have moved on to become Microsoft employees, database administrators, cyber security professionals, and more • Create your own schedule to accommodate classes, exams, etc., working anywhere between 7am-8pm M-F • Work for 15-30 hours/week during the school year and 20-40 hours/week during the summer and winter breaks • Be treated as a true member of the team with real responsibilities, not just an office intern Primary Duties • Develop complex web based and/or GUI based programs for internal and/or external business applications using languages such as PHP, .Net, ColdFusion, or Visual Basic • Configure, deploy, test and perform standard preventive maintenance and simple repairs on department workstations and network components • Analyze, resolve, and follow through on workflow and security incidents Desired Qualifications • Proficient in some form of object-oriented programming language (PHP, Java, C++, .Net, etc) • Has excellent critical thinking skills using logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of multiple solutions or approaches to problems • Able to analyze users' needs, and then design, test, and develop software to meet those needs • Able to analyze and interpret existing code to be able to modify or improve functionality • Experience with PHP, HTML, ColdFusion and/or AJAX a plus • Experience with programming in an IDE with a PHP framework (such as Zend Framework) a plus • Basic computer expertise (networking, computer hardware, etc) • Windows Server 2003/2008 R2 and component (such as IIS) experience • Experience interacting with enterprise database systems (such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, etc) • Windows based troubleshooting experience • Experience with an Active Directory environment is a plus Please note that this position requires a full year commitment May 2014 – May 2015 To Apply: email resume to Stephen Eskin at [log in to unmask] Contact Person: Stephen Eskin Contact Email: [log in to unmask]
