Subject: Volunteer as a Tutor/Mentor for STEM literacy & activites Description: iL.E.A.D. Success Tutoring and Mentoring Services is committed to empowering individuals by providing literacy enrichment through tutoring and mentorship. Youth in 6th -8th grades will develop the confidence to face present-day challenges by engaging personalized learning tools necessary for reading, writing, and mathematics. Our services are designed to stimulate a positive attitude toward STEM literacy, which fosters interdisciplinary inquiry and understanding. Developing this approach enables the community to learn the foundation for success, explore positive avenues for change, achieve goals, and demonstrate leadership. We are looking for enthusiastic and energetic individuals to join our team as tutors and mentors. These individuals will provide and maintain a positive attitude with students, and engage appropriate educational learning tools that meet the reading, writing, and mathematic needs of individual students. Our tutoring and mentoring program is offered most Monday afternoons from 4 – 6PM at the Prince George’s County Hyattsville Branch Library for Fall 2014. Tutors/Mentors work either one-on-one or in small groups with fellow students, offering academic support in an informal setting. The main objective of tutoring is to promote academic independence. While we want students to pass their courses, it is important for them to learn to develop their skills so that the dependence upon a tutor is decreased and self-sufficiency is increased. While hours are flexible, the tutor must be dedicated. Also, tutors must be patient, caring, flexible, organized, and exhibit strong interpersonal skills.
