Subject: Introducing INNOVATE4HEALTH, a technology design competition

Description:
MdBio Foundation is partnering with leading health information technology
companies and the University of Maryland’s Center for Health Information
and Decision Systems, Smith School of Business to challenge high school and
college students to design an innovative solution to a current healthcare
challenge.

We can achieve a healthier world through more effective use of information
and technology. In Maryland, health-related public budget spending accounts
for over 25 percent of all state expenses. Innovations in health
technologies, systems and processes can save lives, promote healthier
communities and significantly increase our quality of life.

Student teams will create an innovative solution to current healthcare
challenges, such as:
The management of chronic diseases
The exchange of information prior to and following a surgery or other acute
care event
Major life stage changes (e.g., pregnancy and aging)
Teams will work together and with a mentor to create an innovative solution,
such as:
Allowing patients to be accountable for their own health
Providing patient support
Allowing for faster and more efficient flow of information among patients,
health care professionals, and other care providers
The healthcare solution may involve innovative technologies such as:
App for mobile device
Web-enabled technology (e.g., Smart TV)
Wearable devices
Health accessories (e.g. scale, pedometer, glucose meter)
Big/small data and analytical systems
Social Media
