The State Department’s Bureau of International Information Programs (IIP) offers exceptional opportunities for student interns to hone multi-disciplinary skills in public diplomacy, communications and social media. This bureau seeks applicants who are digitally proficient in areas of communications campaigns, website design and analytics. Interns may work on digital platforms and support production of written content, visual media or live online programs. The bureau also invites interns with a regional focus to apply. Many IIP assignments include interacting with foreign service officers abroad in one of six geographic areas that mirror the Department’s regional bureaus. The Front Office Applicants interested in internal affairs and management of the bureau including organization-wide communications, event planning, policy and governance, strategic planning, employee development and outreach to external communities - including Congress, embassies in D.C., universities and the technology industry - should apply to work in the Front Office. Programs Applicants interested in a particular region, social media, communications campaigns or analytics should apply to work in the Programs family in IIP and designate their area of interest. Products Applicants interested in producing written or video content, translations or coordinating U.S. speakers’ visits abroad should apply to the Products family in IIP. About the Internship & Application Process This is an unpaid, full time, 10 week internship position. Interns serving in IIP will work closely alongside full time employees on current projects and initiatives, giving them hands-on professional experience. Interns have the opportunity to attend events in DC and develop a professional network in their field. To qualify you must: 1. Be a United States citizen 2. Be at least 16 years old 3. Have at least a 2.5 GPA 4. Be pursuing a baccalaureate or graduate degree. 5. Be a college junior, senior, or graduate student.—You are considered a college junior if you will be starting your junior year immediately following the completion of your internship. 6. Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university on at least a half-time basis. 7. Must be a continuing student—This means that you will be returning to your course of study the semester/quarter, immediately following the completion of your internship. 8.
