Dear Colleague, We invite you to participate in an exciting initiative to honor the career achievements of Tom Edgar, professor of chemical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, and educational leader of AIChE, ASEE, and CACHE. Since 1996 CACHE (Computer Aids for Chemical Engineering) has presented the Award for Excellence in Computing in Chemical Engineering Education. Working with the CACHE organization and the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas, the award will be renamed the Thomas and Donna Edgar CACHE Award for Excellence in Computing in Chemical Engineering Education. The purpose of the award is to recognize lifetime achievements for significant contributions in the development of computer aids for chemical engineering education, an important theme of Tom's outstanding academic career. He has won major education awards from AIChE, ASEE, ISA, and AACC. Our goal is to create an endowment that would fund the award, and the earnings from the fund would cover honoraria for the award recipients. Why is the CACHE organization involved with this initiative? CACHE is a not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to promote cooperation among universities, industry and government in the development and distribution of computer-related and/or technology-based educational aids for the chemical engineering profession. Tom Edgar has served as vice-president, president, and Executive Director of CACHE as well as trustee since 1975. Duncan and Suzanne Mellichamp and Jeff and Sharon Siirola have generously established lead gifts to kick-start the fund endowment, and they invite you to join many of Tom's associates, colleagues, former students, and friends in contributing to the Thomas and Donna Edgar CACHE Award for Excellence in Computing in Chemical Engineering Education. We are appending a pledge card below and ask that you consider returning it with your commitment at your earliest convenience. Of course, your contribution is tax deductible and donors will be suitably recognized in the award documentation. You are welcome to contact any of the Steering Committee members in case you need more information. Also, please forward this email to others who you feel would be interested in contributing. We sincerely hope that you share our enthusiasm for this initiative and that you will join the ranks of Edgar CACHE Award Fund donors.
