The MIT Energy Initiative at Massachusetts Institute of Technology invites applications for a Post-Doctoral position for a project investigating the design and operation of flexible carbon capture and storage at fossil-fuel power plants, that is funded by ARPA-E. The postdoc will work with Howard Herzog, Senior Research Engineer at the MIT Energy Initiative and the project lead, and MITEI Research Scientists, Dr. Emre Gençer and Dr. Dharik Mallapragada.
The project will develop models to investigate the cost-effective design and operation of a near-zero emission power plant concept that combines flue gas CO2 capture with a lime-based direct air capture (DAC) process in a way that does not impact power plant flexibility. The ideal candidate for this industry collaborative project should have expertise and a relevant track record in i) process modeling, ii) techno economic assessment, iii) modeling and optimization, and iv) power plant and carbon capture process modeling. Demonstrated knowledge of using commercial process modeling software such as Aspen Plus, programming languages such as MATLAB or Python is required. Experience with mathematical optimization techniques and surrogate model development is preferred. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to interact and work closely with researchers at MIT Energy Initiative’s Low-Carbon Energy Centers.
Applicants must have a PhD (or equivalent experience and/or qualifications) in chemical engineering or a subject pertinent to the research area. Candidates are expected to regularly present research results in meetings and workshops, prepare quarterly progress reports, publish papers in international conferences and in peer-reviewed journals. Excellent communication skills, being able to produce with minimal supervision and prioritize work to meet deadlines are essential. All applicants must be fluent in spoken and written English. This is a one-year position with possibility of renewal depending on the progress achieved and continued funding.
