The Department “Process Systems Engineering” (Director: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Kai Sundmacher) at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems is inviting applications for the position of a PhD Student (m/f/d) with the research topic “Experimental Analysis of the Chemical Recycling of Polymeric Materials” (call reference “MaxDePoly PhD application 2021-1“). The payment follows TVöD (Salary Class 75% E13). The position is to be filled as soon as possible and is limited to three years.

 

The advertised position is embedded into the research project Max-DePoly. The research topic contributes to the concept of circular economy.  The overall objective of Max-DePoly is to advance the scientific fundamentals of chemical recycling of various polymer materials. In particular, the project aims to investigate chemo-catalytic conversion processes to establish a closed material cycle by depolymerisation of polymers to monomers. 

Tasks

• design and implement experimental facilities to investigate the chemical recycling of polymeric materials,
• develop analytical methods to quantify the progress of depolymerisation reactions,
• identify suitable solvent and catalyst systems for depolymerisation,
• support experimentally the theoretical studies related to chemical recycling of polymers.

 

Requirements:

 

Suitable candidates:

• hold a master degree in the engineering or natural sciences, preferentially in chemical or process engineering, physics, chemistry or related disciplines with grades above average,
• have strong interest in experimental work for reaction engineering and chemical analysis, 
• have strong communication skills and motivation for the cooperation with colleagues focusing on modeling and mathematical optimization of depolymerisation processes.  

Knowledge and experience in chemical engineering laboratory work and chemical analytics are advantageous.
