Subject: Laboratory is recruiting ~3 undergraduate students Description: The St. Leger laboratory is recruiting ~3 undergraduate students to replace recent graduates. They will work for pay (starting at $12.50/hr) and/or credits (up to two per semester), usually both. Hours will be negotiated, but approx 10 hours per week. The laboratory mostly works on pathogens of insects as a model for understanding how pathogens and their hosts in general evolve. Other projects are being conducted on plant symbionts and mosquito control in West Africa (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymond_St._Leger). Student duties will be varied. They will be expected to help graduate students with lab maintenance, and will be taught microbiological techniques, and widely used experimental methods for studying Drosophila, an essential model for genetic research. They will gain experience in all aspects of our projects including working with diverse insects, performing infections, looking at the plant microbiome, bioinformatics, collecting and analyzing samples from field sites, and microscopy. Many previous students have worked for several semesters in the lab and eventually performed their own projects that led to papers. Students must be a natural problem solver and are able to demonstrate this when interviewing.
